La Basilica (Andrea Palladio)

The Basilica in piazza dei signori is one of Palladio’s greatest works and was originally built over the palace of justice from Roman times.  Palladio was commissioned to reinforce the structures which had been collapsing over the years and his revolutionary ideas were to become the basis for all future architecture.  La Basilica was the first major work of Andrea Palladio and is now the symbol of Vicenza.  Have a good look at the bricks and the columns, no two are alike.  It was built in two stages.  Palladio was commissioned to rebuild the palaces in 1546 at the age of 38 years old, but the 2nd tier wasn’t completed until 1614 - over 30 years after his death.  The real genius of Palladio lies in his ability to mask the irregularity of the building by providing it with a homogenious appearance.  The statues atop the basilica are from the 16th and 17th centuries.
