The arch at the foot of Monte Berico leads up to the church.  We'll approach it on our way down and stop for some pictures of the city at the halfway point of Monte Berico which is known among locals as "lovers' lane".  Cobblestone roads wind their way thru villas overlooking the Valley of silence on the way home passing by a “colombara” where homing pigeons were once used to communicate news of the city during times of war when Vicenza was cut off by surrounding armies.  Vicentinos are known as “magna-gatti” which is dialect for “cat eaters” because of a siege during medieval times when the city was completely cut off from provisions and the people turned to the most readily available food source around.  Cats were originally brought in from Venice Italy as a means of combating the rodent problem in the city.
