Dedicated to Santa Maria Maggiore, the Duomo is a powerfully built Gothic cathedral which looms over other churches and has undergone varoius modifications
through the centuries. Two and a half meters below the Duomo are the remains of an 8th century basilica and another with no less than five naves which dates from the 11th century.
Just under the present floor some 20 centimeters down are the foundations of yet another basilica dating from sometime around the 13th century. Most likely there was a sacred building
during the Roman rule of the Paleo-Christian era. The fascade dates back to 1467 and is covered by pink and white marble in four horizontal bands. Inside there is a large nave and
seven chapels to the right and left. The crypt is reached from the stairs in front of the seventh chapel. The Duomo is in front of the Criptoportico.
